Jonathan Martin, M.D., Appointed Duke Radiology Residency Program Director

Dear Staff, Residents, Fellows, and Faculty,

I wanted to remind all of you of the leadership change in the Program Director role of our Diagnostic Radiology Residency effective May 1, 2024.

After a national search and serious consideration of qualified candidates who were external to Duke, our best candidate moving forward is our own Jonathan Martin MD and he has assumed Program Director duties.

Our residency program has thrived and continues to be one of the most competitive in the country, recognized as among the best radiology residency training programs year after year.

Dr. Martin will work closely with Dr. Brendan Cline, our Program Director for the Vascular and Interventional Radiology Residency Program. To date, the interactions and connectedness between our two training programs and their residents have been excellent, and we anticipate they will be enhanced moving forward.

Dr. Martin has been on our faculty since 2018. He was a resident at Duke Radiology from 2011 to 2015 and served as a fellow in our VIR program prior to joining the faculty at Emory where he played a significant and innovative role in both medical student and resident education. Since 2020, Dr. Martin has served as a co-director, along with Dr. Robert French, of our recently revised medical student clerkship, and under their watch the clerkship has thrived.

Dr. Dot Lowell and Dr. Jesse Houk will share Assistant DR Program director duties moving forward.

I would like to sincerely thank Karen Johnson, MD, for going above and beyond by serving the department and residency as the Interim Program Director for nearly a year while also serving as the Division Chief of Breast Imaging. Dr. Johnson’s leadership has ensured a smooth transition during this time of change.

I would also like to thank Dr. Charles Maxfield who led the search committee for the new Program Director. Dr. Maxfield assembled a diverse group of committee members including residents who provided valuable input to this important departmental leadership position.

Congratulations Dr. Martin!
