Congratulations E.J. Langman, M.D., Appointed Director of Medical Student Education

Dear Staff, Residents, and Faculty,

I write to inform you of a change in leadership of our Director of Medical Student Education. As you know, Drs. Jon Martin and Rob French directed our Core Radiology Clerkship over the last four years and will be stepping down. I am pleased to announce that E.J. Langman, M.D., will serve as Director moving forward.

Dr. Langman knows the Duke School of Medicine quite well as she graduated from Duke in 2009. She was a Diagnostic Radiology Resident with us from 2010 through 2014, followed by our fellowship in Breast Imaging. After fellowship, she accepted a faculty appointment at the University of North Carolina, where she served until 2017. We were fortunate to recruit her back to Duke to be a member of the Community Division, where Dr. Langman served as the Breast Imaging Director, and helped launch breast imaging at three new independent diagnostic testing facilities and led the addition of new service lines including breast MR biopsies at Duke Raleigh Hospital. In 2022, she was recruited to the Breast Imaging Division at Duke Hospital. Since then, Dr. Langman has had significant involvement in the day-to-day informal teaching and formal teaching of medical students. She has also served as a faculty mentor for Duke medical students through the First Generation and Low-Income Medical Student Association and Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association.

I would like to extend special thanks and gratitude to Drs. Martin and French who have transformed our Clerkship, which is one of the few such programs nationwide. Drs. Martin and French guided the Department through the integration of the Pioneer Curriculum and led the immersion program for first year medical students, held in August. Under Dr. Martin’s and Dr. French’s watch, the evaluations from the medical students have trended upward in a positive direction.

As Dr. Langman assumes this leadership role, it is her full intention to carry on with the excellent momentum created by Drs. Martin and French. In addition to focusing on the second-year radiology core clerkship, Dr. Langman hopes to further incorporate radiology education into the pre-clinical first year curriculum and provide additional structure and oversight for medical student radiology electives.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Langman to her new role.

Sincerely,

Erik K. Paulson, M.D.
